TENS

TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

TENS is a method of electrical stimulation which primarily aims to provide a degree of symptomatic pain relief by exciting sensory nerves and thereby stimulating either the pain gate mechanism and/or the opioid system.

TENS

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It is a therapy that uses low-voltage electrical currents to alleviate pain. TENS units are portable, battery-operated devices that deliver electrical stimulation through electrode pads placed on the skin.

TENS therapy can be used to manage various types of acute and chronic pain, such as musculoskeletal pain, nerve pain, arthritis pain, back pain, neck pain, and postoperative pain. It is commonly used as a non-invasive alternative or adjunct to pain medication.

The electrical impulses delivered by the TENS unit work to alleviate pain in several ways. They help to block or disrupt pain signals from reaching the brain by stimulating sensory nerves. The stimulation also triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals. The combination of these effects can lead to pain reduction and improved comfort.

TENS therapy is generally safe when used correctly. However, there are some precautions and contraindications to be aware of. It should not be used over areas with open wounds, broken skin, or infected or inflamed tissues. TENS therapy should also be avoided by individuals with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices, as it may interfere with their function. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure the safe and appropriate use of TENS therapy for your specific needs.
